*UPDATE* It fucking happened again. Literally the second ever time I leave the car outside for an extended time and then when I went out to fill my tires (winter temps, no TPMS) I noticed a lugbolt gone from I think the same wheel too. Cameras caught nothing. I was inside the damn house. So I reported it to the cops, and the neighborhood, and now I need more home defense. Anyone know where to buy a cannon?
For the first time since moving in 4 months ago I left my car outside the garage last night. I’ve never been worried about crime in this area and have left other nice cars out there. Anyway some fucker stole ONE LUGBOLT. I only saw while svending the car and had to get to Porsche writing t minutes of their parts department closing. WTF is wrong with people? Fuck them.

Was it a locking bolt that was removed? Might be prepping for dashing with the wheels by getting rid of the lock before coming back for the rest so they won’t hold him up?
![]() 09/14/2019 at 15:53 |

Are you sure it didn’t just come loose? Seems unlikely they’d take one bolt out, and take it with them when they ran off
. I don’t think wheel thieves
usually take the nuts/bolts with them.

Well it was there yesterday. And all the others are still torqued to 118. Pretty sure it just coming out is very very barely possible.

I was wondering if it was some sort of testing the waters, but no there are no locking bolts. I talked to my neighbor whose dog apparently barked at 3am so maybe their lights turning on scared the person away before they could get more?

Weird
![]() 09/14/2019 at 16:01 |

Seems like the likely scenario. Risk is that they’ll be back...

well thats just wierd....
![]() 09/14/2019 at 16:08 |

Seems like the only reasonable explanations are that someone started but got spooked, or that it wasn’t torqued down right and worked it’s way out. Easy enough to verify the others are torqued right, but in the first scenario, it seems quite possible they’ll return.

All others are at 118 and survived my recent 2000+ mile road trip. But yeah I don't know 100% that it was stolen I guess. Just very likely. So now my outside lights will be on every night and I'm looking at cameras. Great.

Exactly.

I’m not really familiar with Porsche hardware. Doesn’t removing a lug usually require taking the wheel off or getting underneath and behind the wheel to reach the parts ?
![]() 09/14/2019 at 17:21 |

No, it has lug bolts not lug nuts. Bolts that go into threaded holes rather than nuts that go onto threaded rod. You just need a 19mm socket
![]() 09/14/2019 at 17:32 |

The bigger crime here is that Porsche still uses lug bolts. Come on, Porsche

I find both that design and the fact that exactly one is missing to be bizarre. It’s hard to imagine a would-be wheel thief taking one bolt completely out, not loosening any others , and picking up the one bolt in addition to whatever gear he brought with him before running off .
I guess there isn’t really a good reason not to use a bolt instead of a stud . I immediately pictured myself trying to hold the wheel and start the bolts while changing a tire alone . Then I realized how rarely I’ve seen modern tires go flat instead of just getting slow leaks. Plus the growing number of cars now that don’t have a spare to install anyway.
![]() 09/14/2019 at 19:37 |
|
Well there are wheel hangers that are just threaded studs you replace the first two bolts with to keep the wheel in place.
But also my thoughts are either thief wanted to just be a fuck head and take something from a Porsche. Or the neighbor's dog scared them.
![]() 09/14/2019 at 19:38 |

Yeah I’m looking into the stud conversion but didn’t feel it was necessary until I was tracking it more heavily.
![]() 09/14/2019 at 19:54 |

Yeah, no need until you begin to exceed what the car could do from the factory from what I understand

My MINIs and GTI are that way too, as are many newer cars. Not sure why; it does make it harder to align things.

Very VAGCOM. My dad's Eurovan is the same way.

Are Boxster wheels or lugs particularly desirable?
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:30 |

My BMW too. It’s a mild nuisance, especially swapping front tires, since those wheels spin freely.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:32 |

Yes, I helped him replace all his suspension bits . When we started losing daylight, getting that damn this back on was a little tedious.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:33 |

If the threads are messed up a little bit it might not hold torque.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:34 |

If he had a CGT it wouldn't. It would have 400lb.ft. center locking hubs instead.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:34 |

Cayman, and I doubt it. I think it’s likely a case of someone annoyed that I bought the house as a late 20's, no family, guy with a Porsche. Though some neighbo
rs have mentioned some car vandalism in the past, this seems more targeted jackassery than purposeful theft.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:37 |

All of my VWs use bolts. They’re totally fine, just different. Makes putting wheels on the car a little harder, especially if you need to use a hub-centric ring, but still not so bad.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:37 |
|
I was wondering about this.... so even though it threads in exactly the same as all others and torque’s to the same number
(
and actually multiple times since I’ve done brake pad swaps and wheel swaps multiple times since the last occurrence) it still could have bad threads and loosen itself?
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:40 |

So does my BMW, actually. It’s an Euro thing. That’s probably why Car Mechanic Simulator all uses lug bolts too.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:40 |

That’s sad. If I was threatened by your mild successes, I would probably ask myself why I would give a shit.

I’m not sure it’s success so much as maybe they feel I’m disrespecting what they feel everyone is supposed to do? Be a nice couple with nice children and care about your lawn and garden or whatever. Plus my car is cheaper than most of the trucks and SUVs around here lol
![]() 12/07/2019 at 18:55 |

Unlikely, but possible. What I would do to check is take the wheel off. Then, using one bolt, thread that bolt through the hub and check for play compared to other holes. More play equals more wear. And just generally look closely at the threads; nibs, burrs, more shiny spots or flat sits compared to other holes could indicate wear.

Drop one of these on your walkway and hook it up to a doorbell. Any time someone comes onto your driveway, your doorbell will go off. Better yet, tie it to a camera to snap a picture.

Will do! I’d love to be wrong about it being a theft, although how expensive would fixing that problem be? Oof.
Thanks for the help though!
![]() 12/07/2019 at 19:14 |

It would be as expensive as a new wheel hub costs.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 19:15 |

Well that sucks. Just for arguments sake are the threads for the bolt damaged ? Sounds like you need a camera system which wouldn’t be a bad investment for a new place. As for a cannon I think you can get one that hooks up to propane tanks. Connect it to a system that works with cameras and you could have a lot of fun XD. Although personally I would prefer a shotgun from Mossberg. Nothing will makes someone’s blood run colder when they are doing something they shouldn’t and hear a shotgun pump behind them. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 19:15 |

Yeah that and other options (better cameras, a moat...of gasoline...on fire) but if it really is a theft I’ll be looking into this. I just hate how it makes me feel, at my own house which I just got.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 19:20 |
|
Per AMGtech’s reply I will likely check to make sure it’s not damaged threads, but when I asked Porsche about this the service guy said he’d never heard of it happening in his 20 years (that the bolt actually loosened enough to fall out).
And I have 2 Blink cameras but they’re finicky and I was hoping their obvious mounting and lights would be more of a deterrent. I don’t think they’ll get good enough images to identify someone if they even try hiding a bit from them.
I’ve thought about the shotgun too but that requires both my catching them, and not using it on myself first. Though I guess the latter solves the former.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 19:25 |
|
So essentially this?
![]() 12/07/2019 at 19:41 |
|
Maybe set another one at a different angle that is much more hidden so they end up facing that one. Your Porsche might need Tesla’s sentry system.
You don’t need ammo for a shotgun to be effective deterrent or weapon . I enjoyed tagging along for sporting clays so I decided to pick one up that I could also use for the unlikely case of home defense. My 590A1 came stock with a bayonet lug which I found hilarious.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 19:47 |
|
Ya but looks like that hub fits every porsche from the 2010 so on the extremely slim chance yours has a bad thread you could pick up a used one from a crashed car for cheaper I bet.
I think the odds you've got some weirdo who likes stealing your lug bolts is higher than the odds your threads are jacked up

Squirrels like nuts you know..... And they can’t tell the difference between a nut and a bolt......
![]() 12/07/2019 at 20:01 |

Oh man that would be worse than human thieves. I can’t anger the squirrel overlords.... not again.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 20:03 |

Need to know what a “bayonet lug” is now lol
I was thinking of aiming one more subtly, but they were supposed to be obvious for a deterrent as I think even if I caught a 4K image of my next door neighbor I don’t think anything would come of it. It’s an $8 part.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 20:05 |

Good point. Well, both good points. I’m just trying to be optimistic for once in my life because replacing a part for a few hundred is actually better than a mystery shit head making me feel vulnerable.

They might be scones!

My Volvo does as well apparently (though my previous Volvo did not, perhaps on account of it being a secret Mitsubishi) . On the S60 they look like lug nuts, but are actually bolts.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 20:30 |

Yeah, I know. I’ve had my car broken into several times. Made me want to electrocute people for touching the door handles.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 20:52 |

It is basically a mount so you can put a knife (M9, M10 or OKC 3S for the 590a1 ) on the front. Would I need that? No. Does it make me giggle that I could? Most definitely.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:05 |

Oh boo. For some reason I read lug as slug lol like IT CAME WITH A BAYONET THAT YOU SHOOT!?
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:06 |

I think it’s unlikely a thief did this. More likely it came loose and fell off on the road somewhere.

I started losing lugbolts on the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike earlier this year. I wondered what all of that clunking was and then suddenly there was a heck of a wobble. Turns out the previous owner of the vehicle I was driving installed lugs that were TOO LONG FOR THE WHEELS. I was down to two in the right rear tire.
Exciting times.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:17 |

Ya that sucks. Park in the garage and get a big dog?
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:18 |

or an option on the gt3. There was a funny story of a guy popping a tire in middle of nowhere northern new hampshire. how it turned into a 7 hour stop.
First AAA guy took 1;45, didn’t have an impact high enough to break it. Hopping on the breaker bar didn’t work either. Then they a flatbed, but with no extra ramps to drag it up. So another couple hours waiting for another flatbed with ramps.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:26 |
|
Yeah but like I said, literally the 2nd time I’ve left it outside unattended for even a few hours. Can you train a dog to shoot first and ask questions later?
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:27 |
|
Maybe I should put poison ivy extract or something on the lug bolts lol
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:28 |
|
Holy shit. That sounds like a nightmare.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:31 |
|
Twice? And I noticed both the only times after having the car outside my garage unattended?
I’m not saying it’s not the scenario I’m actually hoping for, and I’m trying to engineer the cause in my head (bad threads, thermal constriction, etc) but it just doesn’t seem probable given other things I’ve mentioned.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:37 |

If it IS the same wheel and corner of the car, I would interpret that as even more likely to be a mechanical culprit rather than a human one
![]() 12/07/2019 at 21:51 |
|
100% agree and added that to the list in favor of “it fell out”, but unfortunately I can’t actually prove it’s the same wheel/hole. I know from the above picture it was a rear wheel so it’s certainly possible. I’ll check what AMGtech said to check and hopefully put this to rest.
![]() 12/07/2019 at 23:05 |

Just connect them up to the car battery !
![]() 12/08/2019 at 00:50 |

It’s only scary if you realize what’s happening.
The parts department at the dealer got a good chuckle after scolding me.
So it is kind of insane for someone to be stealing your lugs. I hope you find the bastards.
![]() 12/08/2019 at 02:00 |

Turns out I can identify the first lost bolt was from my rear passenger side from the picture above. And this time it was the rear driver side. So, less likely to be one bad threaded hole.

GT3? No private helicopter to get him out of that situation? What a pleb.
